Nilgai repellent

                                   BEHAVIOUR

Nilgai prefer areas with short bushes and scattered trees in scrub forests and grassy plains. They are common in agricultural lands, but hardly occur in dense woods.

The populations of nilgai in India are so large that farmers in the states of BiharChhattisgarhHaryanaMadhya PradeshMaharashtraRajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have pleaded to the government to cull them.

Nilgai herds raid and trample crop fields across these states, often causing food shortages

STATISTICS FOR CROP DAMAGE BY NILGAI:

They have become locally overabundant in these states, thereby causing seriousproblems which include damage to crops, economic losses and increased incidence of road mishaps due to vehicular collisions. Nilgai caused extensivedamage to most agricultural crops.

PRESENT SOLUTIONS

Farmers use live electric wires to guard their farms, which kills other animals as well.

culling, building enclosures for the antelopes and fencing off agricultural areas as remedies for the menace.

The scientists and farmers have also come up with a number of innovative methods like fencing the agricultural land (where crops are grown) with audiotapes and using excreta of donkey and mixing it with cow urine and other vegetable wastes to produce foul smell to allay the menace of blue bulls in the region

Inspite of all these solutions , damage and economic loss does not reduce because none of the present solutions are sustainable.
